this is something i'm working on still, just wanted to show it and see if i could get some feedback on where it's going. it's a really small painting, like 6" x 5". water colour and india ink.

really great paper. i got a sketchbook at owajimaya that's got this really thin and extremely textured paper in it. it's pretty cool, i'm forced to draw really lightly so my strokes come out really whispy and light.

this was an all colored pencil drawing. i've never scanned a colored pencil drawing, so here's the story with this one. it's actually really lightly drawn, and all of the colors in the real piece have almost perfect harmony. some of the colors reacted differently to the light on my scanner for some reason, the orange on his face ended up looking purple, the yellow is ten times more visible than it is in the original drawing, and it just looks like mud. i'm not happy about that...

this was my entry for a Satellitesoda battle. we were supposed to do fanart of REYYY's awesome comic "Dead in the Now". I don't think I ever got around to posting it on the forum though. but basically it's me about to go at it with Braz, the main character. hence the "Faz vs Braz" at the top.

I've just received news that the film I worked on will be showing in a few film festivals. a few of the scenes that I animated can actually be seen in the trailer. I'm pretty excited for this movie, it looks really good!!

XXIV. A bit of optimism

So I'm sure I'm not the only person freaking out about the future of our country. I've been thinking a lot about what I should be trying to do with myself, with my art, where I want to be and all of that. But something just sparked a bit of inspiration in me. That being the current trends in American fashion (mainly new york) and it's successful reviews in recent publications. New york fashion designers have recently blown up and are now outshining European designers. Namely: Band of Outsiders, Rag and Bone, Guilded Age, Obedient Sons, and Duckie Brown. I think this is a good sign. If the clothing does as well in other countries as it is here, then it will do better for our economy because people from other countries will start buying our American goods!
All we need to do is shift the manufacturing to the U.S. and all will be good. So I've been thinking about trying to get into fashion. I have always been interested in fashion but didn't want to get into it because I felt morally obligated to try to do something with a bit more integrity than just make people look pretty. But now that I feel like this could be a good move to improve the state of our economy I'm thinking now's the best time to push myself toward a career rather than hang onto the job(s) that I have in the food service industry for fear of not being able to get another one.

I just felt like I had to put my opinion somewhere. I have a blog. What greater a use:
I think a lot of people are dumb. I say this because I feel like the only people that understand art art usually artists (sometimes). I think it shouldn't have to be this hard to get a message through to people. It's starting to feel like everything that anyone creates now a days is useless. It's come down to "how cool is this?" and "how long will it be cool?"

...I don't make "cool" art. I'm not going apologize to you if you don't like me or my art.
I guess this really only applies to people in the states, as here it's all about what's in, and what sells. But who controls what sells? The people who understand, and make things popular because they believe in it's message. But then we come along and make it into a trend and kill it. My example, so that you can hopefully understand what I'm saying is this recently out trend that's no longer cool of wearing keffiyehs. It started out as people being against the wars in the 80's. a few months ago people started wearing them for the same reason now. All of a sudden they sell them at urban outfitters. Now all of the hipsters wear them. ooh, so chic. It's now lost is effectiveness because people sucked it's symbolic meaning from it and turned it into an accessory.
Art is now an accessory. We hang it on our walls and set it as our desktop backgrounds, wear it on our shirts and bodies, and our messenger bags. It's all meaningless...
What happened?
I've lost all hope in anything good happening to anyone in my lifetime. I hope that the brilliant minds of our future generations cure the world of it's stupidity. It's almost sad how much smarter children are than adults these days. But it gives me hope. It makes me happy to see that they watch enough TV that they know what's happening in other parts of the world.
This entry could go on forever, and I won't let it, because I doubt anyone will read this far because really, who cares what I think. I'm not trying to make a statement. I'm just writing this to myself as a reminder of what I should never let myself become.

So hey guys, I know, long time no update. well a lot has been happening in my life, I've had some good and bad luck. mostly bad, haha. my laptop crashed, and I have to get a new one, but luckily (the good) my bf decided that he'll pay for it, so I am truly blessed. (Thanks babe!)
I moved to seattle, finally on my own again, came out to my parents, got a pretty cool job (not art-related though) and life's pretty nice right now. I feel more at ease right now, and I've been doing lots of sketching around and doodling. I just need to finish something now. so in the meantime, since i also decided to get rid of my website, I got a flickr page. it's pretty cool since it organizes every thing for me and whatnot, but the only thing is that I'll have to post each picture on my blog as a seperate entry, so i won't be posting everything that i post on my flickr, just the stuff that i feel is worth really showing, so feel free to check out my flickr page, flickr.com/fazfazfaz/

so i've had this idea. i want to be a fashion illustrator, or designer, or SOMETHING with fashion. i love it. i think about it all day. i read about it all night. my paychecks somehow turn into awesome clothes. i'm obsessed.
so i wanted to somehow combine my two loves. i decided to design clothing, and then draw people wearing them. well...duh, it's not that original of an idea, haha.

this is the original sketch for my first shirt:

it was inspired mostly by these photos by Grey Scott, Hedi Slimane (of Courtney Love), and the music of Crystal Castles and The Knife.
here's the shirt i made. hand painted on an already inverted stripes bdg shirt with acrylic paint.

overall though, i'm not too happy with how the shirt turned out. the sketch i did looks cool, but when it got to the shirt it turned into this symmetrical, stiff piece of shit! i hate it now that i look at it again. redoooo...

IX. The Insomniac

So it's 4:35 AM, and I'm awake in my bed typing this blog. I've always had this notion that I do my best work at 4 AM, and I think it may be true. I've proven it tonight. Lately I've been staying up quite late mostly thinking about life and such, and every night at 4 AM, right as I'm about to fall asleep, my brother's alarm clock goes off. He doesn't work until 7 AM, but I guess it just takes him 3 hours to get ready for work every morning. Or make that 2. The first hour is dedicated to him waking up. It's been a half an hour and the alarm is still going off from it's initial activation. Usually, I'd call his cell phone (*67 of coarse) and that would wake him up. But today I've decided to give up. I'm too good for doing something so retarded routinely. Instead, I decided to draw. While trying to fall asleep for 5 hours I had tons of ideas, most of which were really cool, and all of them I forgot. Except for the few which I just managed to get on to paper. I just had a few ideas for my new website design, some t-shirts, illustrations, and I think I may have just discovered that I want to be in the fashion industry, or at least be a fashion illustrator. I'll be updating the blog with the actual drawings that I did. I don't feel like hooking up my scanner right now.

this is a W.I.P. of my entry for the Cryptics contest over at satellitesoda.com. judging from the mood of the comic, i was guessing most people would do very action-packed, or funny entries, so i thought i'd contrast that with something quiet, somber, and i guess...somewhat boring.

here's a drawover i did in literally like 3 minutes, just to get it out of the way. basically, i wanted to show a better sense of perspective and scale, so i made the fish guy bigger, and i wasn't digging the vampire kid's silhouette too much so i redrew him, this time closer to the camera, letting me draw him just a bit bigger so that i could get a looser drawing, therefore better pose. i also didn't like the idea of the kite going the opposite direction that i want people's eyes to be going, so as to not give enough attention to little werewolf boy there.

anyways, expect a bit more soon, i'm working on a sort of comicstrip blog type thing just to get some brain-juice dripping...

so after everyone left me all by my lonesome in the big city, i decided that it would be smart to not spend anymore money and to just draw! since i really don't do it enough. this is probably the most i've ever drawn in a two day period since i finished school. now it's just time to start finishing shit!

10-12 minute face. i think i went a bit overboard on it. sometimes i don't know when to stop drawing. i made his eyes too deep. and i think his other eye is closed , haha!

these two have the best likenesses to what kevin actually looks like.

20 minute. took me a while to develop all the structure for the foreshortening. the head is the only thing i don't like about this, and i did some unnecessary hatching on the arm that made it look really really flat. i think i did a good job checking my proportions and stuff with this one.

And so, this is my first post. I don't have anything important to say other than to announce that I'm moving to Seattle in October. So until then, I'll be working on making this blog my new home for all of my art, and I'm abandoning my old website, tehfaz.com. Not only because I've outgrown the name of my domain, but because I hate having to say "yes...it's spelled wrong on purpose" every time I tell someone about it. And that concludes post number one.
